Indian military chiefs brief Singh on ‘defence preparedness’
NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Friday met his service chiefs and chaired a meeting of Cabinet Committee on Security to review New Delhi’s ‘defence preparedness’ on Friday. The meeting took stock of ‘possible conventional military threats’ and the counter-measures that the Indian army, navy and air force had put in place along the borders, Defence Ministry sources said. “The three services chiefs made a presentation on the military preparedness to the prime minister,” the sources said. The Defence Ministry tired to play down the meeting saying it was routine. The army headquarters in Delhi insisted there is no order for a mobilisation of forces, but reports from Barmer, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer in Rajasthan and Ferozepur in Punjab suggest intensified military movement on the international border with Pakistan. “Whatever movement is being reported is normal for this season,” defence officials said, however. Also on Friday, Indian Home Minister P Chidambaram warned Indian security agencies against possible terrorist attacks on airports. iftikhar gilani
